It includes a lot of great security and protection features, providing not only the basics, such as firewall, IPS and gateway anti-virus, but also built-in Wi-Fi support with security and a full web content filtering suite complete with IM and P2P filters. Setup was straightforward.
The initial setup is guided by an easy-to-follow configuration wizard. Using this wizard, the machine is pretty much completely configured in only a few minutes. All other administration is done from the clean and organized web GUI. This GUI is intuitive to navigate. The tree-based navigation pane is well-organized and categories are clear.
Policy configuration is simple as well, with all the security services organized in one place. From here it is easy to turn on the IPS, gateway AV and web content filtering. We also liked the many wizards that are included with the appliance. There are wizards for setup, port assignment, setting access to public servers, VPN setup and Wi-Fi setup. There is also an easy-to-read dashboard, which can provide worldwide attack and virus statistics and local, near real-time statistics as well.
Documentation includes a detailed, getting-started guide in hard-copy format, which provides in-depth initial setup and configuration steps for all the appliance features. Other manuals are in PDF format and include a SonicOS administrator's guide, which takes over where the getting-started guide leaves off. It provides advanced configuration information. All manuals have many screen shots and step-by-step configuration instructions.
