The VASCO aXsGUARD Gatekeeper Enterprise 7 offers an interesting set of features above and beyond the usual UTM functionality. This solution offers a firewall, intrusion prevention system, anti-virus and web content filtering, but it incorporates VASCO two-factor authentication as well.
The initial setup of this appliance is not as straightforward as we like to see, but it is not complicated either. The first step is connecting to the appliance through the web GUI with a system manager account at which point the full administrator can be created. After the administrator account is created, the user logs into the GUI for system configuration and management. The GUI itself is fairly easy to navigate with an organized layout and intuitive controls, but management of the appliance is a little awkward.
There is no automated way to set up this appliance, so we found ourselves clicking around the various areas of the GUI, configuring settings and turning on functions and features.
While this appliance has some strong capabilities, we did not find it very intuitive to manage, and learning how to configure it took some effort.
Documentation that comes with this tool included installation and getting-started guides.
VASCO offers eight-hours-a-day/five-days-a-week phone and email technical support as part of a customer’s subscription package. Customers also can access an online support area with several types of resources, including a knowledge base and tutorials.
At a price just shy of $1,000 for the appliance – including all software features plus anti-virus and web filtering options starting at $25 per user with one year support, updates and standard exchange – we find this product to be an average value for the money. While the aXsGUARD does offer some nice features, if you are looking for a pure-play UTM, this may not be the one.
