Pivotal Software latest hit with W-2 phishing attack

Pivotal Software notified the California Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General that on March 22 the company was hit with a W-2 phishing scam where an unknown number of the company's employees had their tax data compromised.

Joe Militello, Pivotal's chief people officer, wrote in the notice that a worker was tricked by an email purporting to be from company CEO Rob Mee requesting certain information regarding Pivotal employees. The request was fulfilled sending Pivotal employee W-2 information to an unauthorized third party. The information compromised includes name, address, 2015 income information, Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.

Militello said the company has called in law enforcement and has contacted the IRS, while it further investigates the incident.

The company is recommending its workers keep an eye on their finances and Pivotal has secured three years of identity theft protection for those affected.

A request by SCMagazine.com for additional information has not yet been fulfilled.
