When a Navy veteran signed into the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) eBenefits website on Wednesday night, he was shocked to see a different person's name and information pop up each time he came back.
That data may have included medical and financial information, according to an ABC report.
“Wednesday evening, during a process to improve software supporting the joint VA and Department of Defense benefits web portal eBenefits, VA discovered a software defect,” according to a VA statement sent to ABC. The eBenefits website was immediately taken down and remained down as of this article's posting.
The VA's Data Breach Core Team is reviewing the incident and ensuring that all technological issues are worked out before the website is operational again, according to the statement, which adds that all impacted individuals may receive free credit monitoring.
UPDATE: The VA said it thinks that roughly 5,000 veterans were impacted, according to a follow-up ABC report.
