JPMorgan Chase hackers missed fed gov’t employee accounts

While the data breach that hit JPMorgan Chase last summer affected 76 million consumer accounts, 500,000 government employees flew beneath the attackers' radar.

Those responsible for the attack apparently did not tap into information on those government customers, according to a report from Nextgov.com, which quoted a bank spokeswoman as saying that “federal cards issued by JPMorgan were not impacted.”

As a result, the employees don't have to replace their cards, which are issued as part of the federal government's SmartPay program. Citibank and U.S. Bank also participate in that initiative.

Chase has assured customers “there is no evidence” that account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, user IDs and other sensitive information was compromised, but the company has come under close scrutiny for the protracted attack, which also affected 7 million small business accounts.
