Russian lawmaker says Snowden’s asylum may be extended

Edward Snowden's stay in Russian could be longer than expected after a Russian legislator hinted that the country possibly would extend his asylum.

Although the whistleblower was originally granted a stay for one year, Alexy Pushkov, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in Russia's lower house of parliament, indicated on Friday that an extension is not out of question, according to the New York Times.

Speaking on a panel at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Pushkov stated that it would “be up to Snowden” as to when he would return to the U.S., also making mention that Snowden's father believes his son would not be treated fairly if put on trial in the U.S.

American participants on the panel, including Senator John McCain, criticized Snowden's actions and argued that he should be convicted.
