Twitter said Tuesday it had created an online application process so that Twitter accounts could receive verified status.

Verification identifies organizations and individuals as authentic. Those accounts are flagged with a blue badge icon.

"We want to make it even easier for people to find creators and influencers on Twitter so it makes sense for us to let people apply for verification," Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter vice president of user services, said in a release. "We hope opening up this application process results in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience."

The company has begun rolling out the application process, which will go global by week's end.
