FBI warns of potential cyber attacks launched by ISIS hacktivists

Following U.S. military airstrikes in the Middle East, the FBI has issued a warning regarding possible cyber threats aimed at U.S. networks and critical infrastructure by hacktivists in support of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS).

Although the agency “has no information at this time to indicate specific cyber threats” they believe that those aligned with the terrorist group “will continue to threaten and may attempt offensive cyber actions against” the U.S., according to the recent release.

The warning is based on threats made by individuals who align themselves with the ISIS ideology on social media channels such as Twitter.

The messages threaten cyber attacks, such as distributed denial-of-service attacks, as well as physical ones as a response to “the U.S. military presence in the Middle East.”
