The British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) websites were shut down Thursday morning by what is believed to have been a massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack.

The BBC tweeted a statement Thursday morning saying it was “currently experiencing some technical issues” and that it “working as quickly as possible to resolve them.”

The site was down until midday when the BBC tweeted another statement apologizing for the incident and announcing that the website was operating normally, though some pages reportedly took longer than normal to load.

The BBC speculated that a DDoS attack caused the "patchy response" on the site but has yet to confirm, according to a BBC report

The attack also affected BBC associated services including the iPlayer Radio app and iPlayer video on demand service. In July 2014, the iPlayer app was down for an entire weekend due technical problems with a database.
