Car industry bands together to thwart hacking threats

August 27, 2015

Automakers are coming together to help each other guard against hacks of automotive computer systems.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers and the Association of Global Automakers have banded together to lay the groundwork for an industry-wide Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC) intended to share best practices in mitigating automotive cybersecurity threats that enable attackers to gain control of vehicle systems, according to Automotive News.

While car hacking is not yet a mainstream pursuit, and has only been achieved by security experts in demonstrations, it still poses a future threat as attackers figure out ways to monetize the vector.

Every major car manufacturer will participate in the ISAC with suppliers and telecommunications companies projected to join in later. The ISAC is expected to have a dedicated staff of analysts to keep tabs on threats and distribute information. Details are still being worked out.
