Security Research Labs based in Berlin, Germany, revealed at the last May Contain Hackers event that its team has successfully breached live 5G networks, highlighting the security vulnerabilities of the rapidly emerging technology, according to
IEEE Spectrum.
The groups founder, Karsten Nohl, detailed how his team was able to take control of the target network in most cases when they performed a series of red teaming exercises for an organization, and highlighted poorly configured cloud technology as the vulnerability they exploited with greatest success. Many telecommunication companies are still inexperienced regarding 5G network security measures and their operators tend to neglect basic
cloud security techniques needed to prevent breaches, according to Nohl.
5G has swept over telcos with all its implications, and nobody seems well prepared, Nohl said. We are introducing new technology into mobile networks, and those technologies can greatly enhance the security of our mobile networks. Or they can basically destroy any hacking resistance we've built up over the years.
