FBI Director James Comey told the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday that his agency has spotted outside entities attempting to hack voter registration sites in several states.

Comey did not name any potential culprits, but urged statesto make certain their systems are locked down in the run up to the presidentialelections, according to CNN.The recent incursions go beyond what was discovered in July and August, Comeysaid, but these actions have not yet resulted in any actual intrusion. The probes appeared to be only what he called “scanning activities” that could be a precursor to anactual attack.

Comey told the committee the actual voting systems are not connectedto the internet and should be safe.

One possible motive for these scouting maneuvers could be to seed a level of distrust in the U.S. voting system, Comey said.
