FBI promotes Demarest to new cyber exec position

The former assistant director of FBI's Cyber Division, Joseph Demarest, will serve as the first associate executive assistant director of the bureau's Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch (CCRSB), according to an FBI release.

Demarest "will serve as chief operations officer for CCRSB — providing technical advice and guidance across its components," FBI Director James Comey, said in the release, adding that the 27-year agency veteran will work toward establishing better relationships and cyber intelligence-sharing between agencies at all levels of government.

In his tenure at the bureau, Demarest has investigated crimes ranging from drugs rings to white collar crime, eventually focusing on counter-terrorism. Most notably he was part of the operation that foiled the 2009 plot to bomb the New York City subway and the investigation that brought down former investment advisor Bernie Madoff.
