Despite its continued call for improved consumer transparency among data brokers, The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) found that “little progress has been made."
On Tuesday, the FTC released a 110-page report called, “Data Brokers: A Call for Transparency and Accountability,” which illuminated the practices of businesses that collect and sell consumers' personal information.
The agency recommended that Congress consider legislation to provide better oversight for such businesses.
The FTC called for legislation that gives consumers the ability to opt out of having their data shared for marketing purposes. In addition, the report pushed for a law that would make data brokers' use of risk mitigation products (such as those that result in denial of credit, employment or other essential benefits for consumers) more transparent.
The FTC also advocated for legislation that regulates the use of people search services and tools.
