Increased NATO flexibility urged to combat cybersecurity threats

White House Deputy National Security Adviser for Cyber and Emerging Technologies Anne Neuberger has called on NATO to be more flexible in responding to nation-state attacks and other cybersecurity threats, CyberScoop reports. "Just as NATO is prepared to respond to kinetic [battlefield] crises our allies face, we must also be prepared to respond to cyber crises. We must be more nimble as an alliance... in providing direct, technical, and necessary support if a country faces a significant disruptive attack," said Neuberger at a NATO meeting in Rome. Despite the admirable response of NATO to a series of Iranian cyberattacks against multiple Albanian government sites in July, NATO still has lacking technical capabilities in cyberattack response, Neuberger added. Neuberger also emphasized the benefits that could be brought upon by investing in cyber resilience as evidenced by Ukraine's continued defense against Russian cyberattacks. "Ukraine has in many cases been able to successfully defend against sophisticated cyberattacks due to the work that was done before the Russian invasion," she added.
