Instagram has become the latest social media giant to take on hate speech with the release of a new tool that will allow its users to limit what appears on their pages.

The photo-centric site joins Facebook, Twitter, Google and Microsoft which all have rolled out their own plans to limit hate speech. Instagram has added a “comments tool” that will let users list words they consider offensive or inappropriate and any posts that contain these will be hidden, wrote Instagram CEO and Co-founder Kevin Systrom in a blog.

“To empower each individual, we need to promote a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves without criticism or harassment. It's not only my personal wish to do this, I believe it's also our responsibility as a company,” he said.

The tool is now live on Instagram.
