The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) unveiled two projects designed to secure email—the first, a draft document of guidelines to enhance trust in email and the second, an initiative by the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) to find collaborators who can lend solutions and expertise to demonstrate a secure, standards-based email system built from software and tools that are commercially available.
“The two main threats to current email services are phishing and leaking confidential information,” computer scientist Scott Rose explained in a NIST release.
The Trustworthy Email draft offers an overview of best practices and existing technologies to address those two threats and others. The authors have also included deployment guides to ensure email systems meet the security requirements established by the federal government. The standards body has called for comments on the draft.
