The New York Police Department's (NYPD) Captains Endowment Association website was hit by a cyber attack this weekend according to The New York Daily News.
NYPD Union President Roy Richter linked the attack – which infected the website with malware – to the hacktivist collective Anonymous based on comments made on Twitter. Richter did clarify that investigators have not officially discovered the source of the malware.
In a letter to the police union, Richter stated that no personal data was stored on the website, adding that the attack was more of "a nuisance rather than a security threat."
An Anonymous spokesman told Techworm.net that the group was "unaware of any current actions against the NYPD, but any attacks should be expected in response to their systematic targeting and abuse of the people they're supposed to protect."
