Rheinmetall cyberattack attributed to Black Basta

Ransomware operation Black Basta was confirmed by German automotive and arms producer Rheinmetall to be responsible for a cyberattack last month, which coincided with reported negotiations between Rheinmetall and Ukraine regarding the construction of a new tank factory in the country, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Only Rheinmetall's civilian business was disrupted by the cyberattack identified on April 14, according to a company spokesperson, who added that Rheinmetall has issued the necessary notifications regarding the incident and filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor's office in Cologne amid ongoing attack recovery efforts. Black Basta has been on an attack spree over the past year, having recently compromised the American Dental Association, Swedish-Swiss multinational automation technology firm ABB, major UK business processing outsourcing firm Capita, and German wind farm operator Deutsche Windtechnik, and has also been associated with the FIN7 hacking operation last year.
