Russian man pleads guilty to wire fraud in online fraud scheme

A Russian national has pleaded guilty in a U.S. District court in Boston on Monday to one count of wire fraud in relation to an online crime scheme that earned more than $400,000.

Alexey Svetlichnyy, 32, who resides in Tewksbury, Mass., purchased stolen credit and debit card information from illegal sites like Carder Planet and Vendorsname, in order to make fraudulent purchases and resell them on eBay, according to the FBI.

Along with his co-conspirators, Svetlichnyy used the stolen data to purchase consumer goods such as laptops, iPads, smartphones and other expensive electronics – in addition to gift cards from retailers – which were sent to addresses he controlled, later selling the goods and cards via eBay, ultimately earning more than $427,000.

He faces up to 20 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a six-figure fine and restitution.
