A run of spam using Huricane Sandy as its hook is making the rounds, according to security researchers. The junk mail, which promises everything from restaurant deals to help with insurance claims, guides unsuspecting users to a web page where they can “win” a MacBook, iPad or iPhone 5, according to a Thursday Sophos blog post. The page is designed to look like Wikipedia, and from there, scammers hope to obtain personal information via web forms. The fraudsters may also use this data to initiate recurring premium-rate SMS charges if they obtain mobile phone numbers, researchers said. So far, no malware has been discovered as a result of the campaign.
