Removable storage devices containing the personal information of some 3.3 million student loan borrowers has turned up apparently untouched in a police evidence room, according to published reports. DVDs storing the confidential data were hijacked when vandals stole two safes sometime between March 20 and 21 from the St. Paul, Minn.-based Educational Credit Management Corp., a student loan guarantor. Police recovered the safes on March 22 and only recently connected them to the data breach. None of the sensitive information was compromised, reports said. — DK
