Third-party data breach impacts University of Rochester

WROC-TV reports that New York's University of Rochester has confirmed being impacted by a third-party breach involving its file transfer service that has also affected nearly 2,500 organizations around the world. "At this time, we believe faculty, staff, and students could be impacted, but we do not yet know the full scope of the impact to University community members or which personal data was accessed, as the investigation is ongoing," said University of Rochester officials in a statement. Such an incident, which has already been alerted to the FBI, has prompted conversations on strengthening the university's cybersecurity defenses, according to University of Rochester 1199 SEIU Union Chapter Vice President Tracey Harrison. Moreover, password changes and other additional security layers have been recommended for individuals whose data may have been compromised. "It's also a good time to refresh passwords for banking or healthcare applications that you access or websites that you access," said Tempus Network Managing Director Paul Robinson.
