NATO pushes for increased military cyber defender involvement

Greater military cyber defender involvement in peacetime is poised to be affirmed by NATO at next month's Vilnius summit, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Such an endorsement is in response to cyber threats posed by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine in Europe, said NATO Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges David van Weel at the 15th annual International Conference on Cyber Conflict. Moreover, the looming Chinese cyber threat has prompted the need for more proactive cyber defenses. "We need to move beyond naming and shaming bad actors in response to isolated cyber incidents, and be clear what norms are being broken. We need to strengthen the role of our military cyber defenders during peacetime. And this is important because in most national contexts, the military only gets involved during crisis and conflict," said van Weel, who added that improved cyber resilience will also be sought by the alliance.
