Vulnerability in Cordova Android platform allows for app behavior modification

A vulnerability in the Android platform of Cordova could allow attackers to modify apps' behavior by clicking a URL.

The modifications can include causing unwanted dialogs showing up, as well as app force-closing, Apache Cordova wrote in its security bulletin. The company released an update to its Cordova Android platform, version 4.0.2, which should solve the issue.

The company recommends all Android applications built using Cordova 4.0x or higher be upgraded. The company also released 3.7.2 for older version of the platform.

Trend Micro wrote in a blog post that to successfully exploit CVE-2015-1835 requires that at least one of the application's components extends from Cordova's base activity so that is not properly secured, or is accessible from outside the app.

Also at least one of Cordova supported preferences is not defined in the configuration file.
