Attracting, Retaining, and Training in Infosec

By Marcos Colon

Attracting and retaining talent for certain professions may be an easy task, but when you consider the challenges that information security faces as it relates to the workforce, that doesn't apply.

By 2021, Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that there will be 3.5 million cybersecurity job openings, and if you consider that cybercrime could cost the world $6 trillion by then, this is a bonafide crisis.

As training opportunities and higher education continue to bolster their cybersecurity offerings, it’s also important for organizations to look outside the box when it comes to attracting talent, says Kelly York, who currently serves as the security awareness manager for the McDonald’s Corporation, but is a former teacher.

“You have to look for someone that’s passionate about security, passionate about technology, and passionate about education,” she told InfoSec Insider during a recent video interview shot at the InfoSec World Conference & Expo in Orlando, Florida. “All we’re doing right now is marketing security to every aspect of the business because nobody seems to be buy in all the time to where we’re going.”

In the full video interview below, York discusses the state of attracting and retaining talent in information security and also provides some helpful tips that could get you and your business over the hump when it comes to the topic.
