A hacker has defaced the websites of a number of American celebrities, in an apparent move to further the cause of a Kurdish homeland.
The targets of the campaign include American pop group Fifth Harmony, Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton and country music sensation Chelsea Bain.
The hacker, who goes by the handle ‘Rekan Error', festooned the pages with the Kurdish flag and anti-Daesh and anti-Turkish messages.
Rekan Error wrote: “Kurdish hacker was here… Long live to Kurdistan, Peshmerga,' followed by: ‘F**k ISIS… F**k Turkey.”
SC Media UK contacted Rekan Error via an email address left on the defaced sites and received confirmation that he was indeed the hacker and that his choice of sites was down to opportunity rather than design.
Iraqi Kurdish forces known as the Peshmerga have been at the forefront of the fight against Daesh, known to its adherents as the Islamic State. The Turkish government have their own fight with the Kurdish political movement, representing Kurds who have long demanded autonomy, often violently. This new strike in the fight for a Kurdish homeland might seem an odd move in a struggle that has little to do with country music stars, Olympic champions or American girl groups.
As of writing, all of the affected sites have been restored.
