7,700 Manatee, Fla. school workers compromised in W-2 scam

Thousands of Manatee (Fla.) County school employees had their W-2 tax form information compromised after a district employee fell for a phishing scam.

How many victims? About 7,700 Manatee school district workers.

What type of information? All the basic personal data contained on a W-2 was lost to cybercriminals.

What happened?  In January unauthorized person sent an email to a payroll employee posing as school superintendent Diana Green requesting all the W-2 forms for the employees who worked for the district in 2016. The employee complied sending a PDF with the requested information. The district did not learn about the incident until February 3 when the IRS informed the school the attack had taken place.

What was the response?  Manatee notified employees and purchased identity theft and credit monitoring services for its workers. The school district already had cyberinsurance. The Bradenton Herald reported that the district had previously been cited for lax network security after audits conducted in 2011, 2014 and 2017.

Quote: Now we are going to be like Fort Knox, said Deputy Superintendent Ron Ciranna.
