Leaked emails tie Russia to separatists – report

A collection of hacked emails from a high-ranking Kremlin official were published by the BBC, shedding additional light into Russia's involvement with separatist leaders in eastern Ukraine.

The emails, hacked from Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vladislav Surkov's inbox by Ukrainian hackers, dispute Moscow's claims that Russia is not linked to the separatist militias and has not played a role in the conflict.

The documents detail Russia's budgets provided funding for the pro-Russian factions and lists separatist politicians sent to Surkov's office. One of the emails, believed to have been sent by the separatist leader Denis Pushilin, displays a map of Ukraine divided into three regions: New Russia, Lesser Russia, and Galicia.

An earlier report by NBC reported that Surkov does not use email and attributed the leaked emails from a “[email protected]” account to his aides. BBC reported an additional email account “[email protected].”
