Opera, like Microsoft and Mozilla, adds fraud protection tool

The new version of Opera Software's browser contains a fraud protection tool.

Version 9.1 of the Opera browser, which has a less-than-1-percent market share, contains real-time fraud protection that combines technology from web certification vendor GeoTrust and PhishTank, a collaborative effort to exchange phishing data, to alert users of bogus sites.

The release of the new version comes at a critical time of the year, said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera.

"Cybercriminals are very active during the holiday season as more people venture online to shop or connect with friends and family," he said. "At Opera, we work very hard to protect the users of our products. We commit a lot of resources to ensure that our users are as safe as possible when they are online."

In addition to the new tool, Opera also supports 256-bit encryption and offers enhanced control over cookies.

The latest versions of Firefox and Internet Explorer also contain anti-phishing features.
