Scotland’s government council heavily targeted by cyberattacks

Cybercriminals have been targeting Scottish government, universities and health organizations at a high rate with more than half of their local councils being by some form of attack since 2014

An investigative report by The Scotsman found that 19 of Scotland's 32 councils were either hit with an attack of some type, with ransomware being the most prevalent, with some of the councils being targeted multiple times. The Aberdeen City council had the dubious honor of being the cybercriminals favorite target suffering 12 successful attacks, including six ransomware. However, this could have been much worse as the council was probed more than 15 million times during the three year period.

In 10 of the incidents the local council declined to inform the police about the attack, however, in each case no personal data was lost.

Eleven boards of health in the country were hit by WannaCry in May and NHS Fife was the subject of three successful ransomsware attacks that required the organization to rebuild its network, The Scotsman reported.
