Know thyself: The case for an information technology asset management program

ITAM task force

The best reason organizations have for implementing an information technology asset management (ITAM) program is to know what they are protecting.

“If you don’t know what you have, how can you protect it,” asked Devon Bryan, former chief information security officer of MUFG Union Bank. “If you don’t know what you have and if you can’t see what you have, how can you defend it? Knowing thyself really goes into a very mature, a very robust, a very impactful IT asset management strategy."

Bryan joined Cybersecurity Collaborative’s Tom Scurrah, vice president of cybersecurity programs and content, to present a roadmap for implementing an ITAM program developed by the Cybersecurity Collaborative’s task force of CISOs and staff.

The ITAM implementation guide details:

  • 7 components that are essential for program operation
  • 10 requirements for program initiation
  • methods for managing existing and newly acquired assets
