Chinese authorities have arrested eight hackers allegedly responsible for last year's worm.whboy attacks, according to media reports from that country.
Reports identified Li Jun, a 25-year-old resident of the Wuhan province, as the worm's author and said he confessed to creating the bug and selling it to other hackers.
Li reportedly earned more than $12,500 by selling the malware.
The bug is also known as the Fujacks worm, according to anti-virus vendor Sophos, which last month said that reports of the worm infecting several million Chinese PCs were greatly exaggerated.
A PC user can spot infection by the replacement of .exe file icons with images of pandas with burning joss sticks.
The worm is parasitic – replacing .exe files with more copies of the malware, officials from Sophos said last month.
