FBI Pittsburgh warns of Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting scams soliciting money and information

The FBI’s Pittsburgh office is warning of potential scammers looking to solicit donations in the aftermath of an Oct. 27 shooting that killed 11 worshipers at the Tree of Life Synagogue.

These scams can originate in the form of emails, websites, mailings, telephone calls, text messages, or even door-to-door collections, according to an Oct. 31 press release.

The agency recommends that everyone take precautions to ensure their contributions or personal information does not end up in the hands of criminals by doing their due diligence to confirm the legitimacy of any agency before donating.

Before making donations, users should remember to not respond to unsolicited incoming emails (spam) including not clicking on links contained in the emails, beware of organizations using copycat names similar to but not exactly the same as those of reputable charities, and not give personal or financial information to anyone who solicits contributions.

Those looking to donate should instead make donations directly to known organizations rather than relying on others to make the donation on their behalf.
