The federal government will create a Federal Privacy Council to coordinate privacy activities across agencies, Shaun Donovan, director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), said Wednesday at the Federal Privacy Summit in Washington.
"It's time to stop re-inventing the privacy wheel at agencies and do a better job of leveraging the success of each agency's related efforts," the International Association of Privacy Professional's The Privacy Advisor quoted Donovan as saying. "It is time to shift from reactive programs to proactive strategies. And it is time to 'professionalize' the privacy profession."
During his keynote, the OMB chief charged agencies with assessing their own privacy offices and “to develop a plan to get to the right place.” He said additional guidance from his agency would be forthcoming.
