Freedom Hosting II (FH2), a Dark Web hosting service, experienced a brownout on Friday losing nearly 20 percent of its sites to a vigilante on an anti child porn crusade, according to a report on Digital Trends.
Rather than the expected results when clicking through to their web page, visitors to more than 10,000 sites housed in the nether regions of the internet, the so-called Dark Web, were greeted with a message stating: “Hello, Freedom Hosting II, you have been hacked.”
An earlier iteration of the hosting provider was busted in 2013 over child porn charges.
The hacker explained to one news outlet that he found 10 child porn sites on FH2 with 30 GB of files, which prompted his action. The takedown was his first hack, he added.
At this point it is not known what the hacker intends to do with the data he acquired at the same time as his hack. However, he did announce that he would give a copy of his data dump to a security researcher who is expected, in turn, to hand it off to law enforcement.
