Protegrity snaps up OmniSecure

Data security management firm Protegrity has announced the acquisition of OmniSecure, a privately held data security company based in Santa Clara, Calif. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 2000, OmniSecure, develops file-level encryption technology designed to provide transparent encryption to protect sensitive data in files (images, applications and databases).

Protection extends to include servers, backup tapes and storage systems. The company's core product, VPDisk protects files at the kernel level. OmniSecure's products will be used to augment Protegrity's Defiance Security Software suite, adding file-level security that will integrate into Protegrity's security policy, reporting and management console.

Jon Oltsik, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group, said: "Companies are looking for strategic security vendors to work with when it comes to protecting their data. Protegrity is one of the only data security companies to combine these key elements of data security into one solution and offer it to organizations on a global basis."

Gordon Rapkin, president and chief executive officer of Protegrity, said, "Sensitive data is pervasive throughout organizations in applications, databases, files, backup and storage, and it must be protected wherever it resides. "With OmniSecure, we now protect information in structured databases as well as unstructured files, and we are the only company that delivers such a comprehensive solution."

Roland Chu, OmniSecure's president, CEO and co-founder, assumed the newly created position of vice president and regional manager of the Asia Pacific region. The acquisition of OmniSecure comes seven months after Protegrity acquired Kavado, an application security vendor.

Protegrity now has over 90 employees and over 300 clients worldwide. Corporate headquarters are in Stamford, CT, with research and development and product support offices in China, Israel, Sweden and Santa Clara, Calif.
