Mitre and Purdue University in Indiana are joining forces to launch a new initiative that will focus on developing innovative research in a wide variety of technology and cybersecurity areas.
The partnership announced Monday will allow the two organizations to share research, expertise and personnel as they research new technologies and workforce solutions in cybersecurity, autonomous systems, microelectronics, avionics, data science, hypersonics, and industrial systems for water, food and energy. It will also create a new on-campus headquarters for Mitre at Purdue’s Convergence Center for Innovation and Collaboration.
“Through our work with Mitre, we recognized the vast potential to expand our successful collaborative research and education model in cybersecurity to many other areas of focus,” said Theresa Mayer, Purdue’s executive vice president for research and partnerships in a statement.
Representatives at Purdue and Mitre did not immediately respond to a request for additional comment.
On Purdue’s side, the research partnership will be led by Mayer, Michelle Dennis of the Office of Industry Partnerships, and Dongyan Xu, director of the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security. Leading for Mitre will be Principal Analyst Matt Mickelson, Vice President of Strategic Engagement and Partnerships James Cook, and Olivia Blackmon, lead for strategic partnerships and academic alliances.
"We’re collaborating to enhance student development, while building a strong and diverse talent pipeline for Mitre and the nation,” Cook said in a statement.
It’s not the first cybersecurity-focused partnership for Purdue. Back in 2019, the university teamed up with the Israel-based company Cyberbit to create a “cyber range” that provides simulated cybersecurity testing and training services around distributed denial-of-service attacks, ransomware, and other cyber threats, as well as a joint Information Technology Security Lab located on the school’s campus. Purdue’s Polytechnic Institute is also home to the Cyber Education Network Training Resources Center, focused on bolstering the training and certification of information security professionals.
