Let’s spam! David Bowie death exploited by social engineering campaign

Cybercriminals wasted no time in exploiting the media attention focused on the passing of David Bowie, launching a spam email campaign with embedded keywords referencing the rock star in the email's code, according to a Tuesday blog post from Trend Micro.

While most spam attempts to gain recipients' attention with alluring keywords in the subject field that prompts them to click on a link or attachment that leads them to a malicious website, this latest social engineering campaign hides the tell-tale keyword within its code. Trend Micro speculates this is done to evade detection.

The company advises users to be on guard against such deceptive email practices and to verify authentication of all email, including that received from senders who appear legitimate.
