Bulgarian national sentenced 30 months for role in ID theft ring

A Bulgarian national received a 30-month prison sentence for his involvement in the Shadowcrew forum, a now dismantled online cybercrime marketplace.

Aleksi Kolarov received his sentence on Thursday in a Newark federal court where he previously pleaded guilty to charges related to conspiracy to commit identity theft and access device fraud, according to a release by the Department of Justice.

Kolarov was apprehended by Paraguayan law enforcement in a hotel in Asunción, Paraguay on June 14, 2011, and was in possession of “hundreds of thousands of dollars” in different currencies. He was extradited to the U.S. on June 28, 2013.

Shawdowcrew.com, where Kolarov served as a vendor, was an illegal marketplace for cybercriminals to purchase stolen credit and bank card numbers. The site caused “more than $4 million in losses to the institutions issuing the cards.”
