Potential data breach reported by University of Manchester

The UK's University of Manchester has disclosed that its data was potentially compromised following a cybersecurity incident earlier last week, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. "It has been confirmed that some of our systems have been accessed by an unauthorized party and data have likely been copied," said the University of Manchester, which noted that the incident has been promptly reported to the appropriate authorities, while also urging its population of more than 40,000 students and over 12,000 staff members to be wary of phishing attacks resulting from the breach. Investigation into the identity of the threat actors behind the intrusion, as well as the type of data accessed by attackers is ongoing, according to the university, which also noted that the incident was not a ransomware attack. Whether the university's Highly Restricted Data Service, which supports researchers dealing with sensitive information, was compromised also remains unclear.
