Maple Leaf Foods cyberattack claimed by Black Basta ransomware gang

SecurityWeek reports that the Black Basta ransomware gang, which has been associated with Russian cybercrime operation FIN7, has admitted to being behind the cyberattack against major Canadian meat and poultry food producer Maple Leaf Foods that resulted in operational disruptions in early November. Numerous screenshots of financial data, technical documents, and other corporate files belonging to Maple Leaf Foods have been leaked by Black Basta, which has previously compromised Canadian grocery and pharmacy chain Sobeys, as well as the U.S. arm of Israeli defense contractor Elbit. Maple Leaf Foods said in a statement that systems compromised by the attack have been restored "quickly and safely" while emphasizing that it would not pay the ransom demanded by attackers despite threats of data leaks. "We are asking responsible people including those in the media not to entertain any 'leads' they get from stolen or compromised data and not to contact anyone based on illegally obtained information," added Maple Leaf Foods.
