Google launches Password Checkup security tool

Google has added a new feature to its password manager that will study a person’s passwords and then inform them on its strength and whether it has been compromised.

Password Checkup will not only check a user’s personal choices, but also make personalized recommendations, wrote Andreas Tuerk, product manager for Password Manager. The three primary areas Checkup will test are whether the passwords have been compromised in a third-party breach, if they are being used across different sites and if they need strengthening.

Tuerk noted that Password Checkup was built out from a Chrome extension that was rolled out earlier this year which examines whether or not a person’s Google username and password have been compromised.

“Later this year, we’ll build Password Checkup technology directly into Chrome for everyone—so you get real time protection as you type your password without needing to install a separate extension,” Tuerk said.
