Chicago Public School data improperly shared

Chicago Public School student information was improperly shared with a third party.

How many victims? 30,000

What type of information? Students' names, addresses, grade levels and their current elementary schools.

What happened? An employee in the school's district shared confidential student data with the Noble Network of Charter Schools, which then used the information for a mail advertising campaign.

What was the response? When informed last month, officials at Noble admitted a staffer "was provided with improperly sourced student and family names and addresses" by an unnamed employee at CPS. The CPS student information was deleted from Noble computers. At CPS, the employee responsible for the breach was denied access to student data systems and, in "an abundance of caution," tens of thousands of notices were sent out to CPS families who might be affected. Representatives at the school district said security procedures are being evaluated and a new student information system would be implemented.

Quote: "CPS is deeply troubled by any violation of students' privacy," said Michael Passman, district spokesman.
