Macron campaign hit by massive hack

A "massive and coordinated" hack was carried out against France's Emmanuel Macron's campaign, staffers said in a statement late Friday.

Both legitimate internal and fake documents were posted on social media by a hacker called EMLEAKS "to sow doubt and disinformation," the staff said. Macron handily defeated his opponent Marine Le Pen in Sunday's election.

"In this pastebin are links to torrents of emails between Macron, his team and other officials, politicians as well as original documents and photos," Mother Jones quoted an anonymous 4chan user as saying. "This was passed on to me today so now I am giving it to you, the people. The leak is massvie and released in the hopes that the human search engine here will be able to start sifting through the contents and figure out exactly what we have here."

The campaign compared the attack as an effort similar to what happened during the U.S. election. "This operation is obviously a democratic destabilization as was seen in the United States during the last presidential campaign," the statement said.
