DeMISTIfying Security: Recruiting and Retaining Cyber Talent (Part 1)

By Ed Moyle and Raef Meeuwisse

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you should be well aware that there’s a serious issue when it comes to recruiting and retaining cybersecurity talent. A massive skills shortage in the industry isn’t making things any easier, either. According to an annual report conducted by ESG, the cybersecurity skills shortage is getting worse. So how does that impact recruitment and retention in cybersecurity today, especially with the increasing demands?

Well, some organizations could be adding to the problem by posting roles that are uninteresting, underpaid, and even unattractive, according to security veteran Raef Meeuwisse.

“Part of the problem is that we’re not training people with the right skills,” adds security veteran Ed Moyle. “In my mind, I feel that even people coming out of higher education with advanced degrees are still missing some of the fundamental key skills needed.”

In the latest segment of DeMISTIfying Security, Ed and Raef discuss recruitment and retention challenges in cybersecurity and offer up some advice for security leaders on the topic.
