Looking to Benefit from AI? Build Something!

By Marcos Colon

If you’ve attended an information security conference in the last year, chances are you’ve heard the term artificial intelligence (AI) more than a handful of times, either during sessions hosted by subject matter experts, or by someone trying to get your attention on an expo floor. But if you have a comprehensive understanding of what AI is and are ready to leverage it as it relates to your security strategy, do you know where to start? According to a recent study by market research firm ESG, 12 percent of organizations are already leveraging AI-based security analytics, and another 27 percent have deployed AI-based security analytics on a limited basis.

Unless you happen to work one of the organizations already tapping into the power of AI, chances are you may need some help in getting started. But one thing’s for sure; it’s not about going out and buying a shiny new tool and adding it to your arsenal, according to Colt Blackmore, director of product management for data science at Cylance.

“Go out and use AI to build your own systems because everyone is fully capable of doing that,” Blackmore told InfoSec Insider during a video interview. “You don’t need a Ph.D., you don’t need a deep mathematical background, and you don’t need anyone’s permission.”

By accessing open source libraries as sci-kit learn for Python and Google’s TensorFlow, security practitioners can get started, Blackmore said, adding that it’s in the organization’s best interest to encourage their team to explore these technologies.

In the full interview below, Blackmore discusses why leveraging AI isn’t limited to purchasing an out-of-the-box solution and details the critical steps that security practitioners should take to successfully utilizing the technology to their organization’s advantage.
