DOJ gets involved in Target breach investigation

January 29, 2014

The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Target's recent data breach.

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder confirmed the department's involvement in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, according to Politico. The department will focus on tracking down the culprits behind the retail store's breach, as well as anyone who exploits the stolen data.

The Judiciary Committee will hold a data breach hearing next week, during which Target's chief financial officer will testify along with other prominent government workers.

Target's breach compromised approximately 40 million credit and debit cards, and was followed by breaches at other retail stores, including Neiman Marcus and Michaels. In the wake of the attacks, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation warned U.S. retailers to prepare for more cyber attacks.
