Fla. passes sweeping data breach notification bill

Florida has repealed its security breach law, and in its stead, passed sweeping legislation seen as possibly the broadest in the country.

The set of bills signed by Gov. Rick Scott, impose tougher breach notification requirements on businesses, among other things, narrowing the breach notification period to 30 days; expanding the definition of person information to cover online login credentials that include username or email address used in conjunction with a password or security question; and compelling them to not only report, but to provide documentation and forensic reports, to the Attorney General's office on breaches affecting more than 500 Floridians.

The law also requires that companies take “reasonable measures” to safeguard personal information in electronic form as well as dispose of customer records.

The White House has also called on lawmakers to set a national data breach reporting standard.
