Former student sentenced to six months for Nebraska university hack

A former University of Nebraska-Lincoln student that hacked into the university's computer system in 2012 was sentenced to six months in prison on Thursday, and also must pay more than $107,000 in restitution, according to a Thursday Omaha.com report.

From his apartment, Daniel Stratman accessed student records, account information and passwords as few as seven times in a one-month span and, in one instance, caused more than $5,000 in damages to the computer system.

The breach was identified in May 2012 and an investigation linked the incident to Stratman, who was a senior when he was arrested.

In December 2013, Stratman pleaded guilty to one count of fraud and related activity in connection with computers, according to the report, which indicates that 11 other related charges were consequently dropped.
